Marcos Alonso to miss FA Cup semi-Final
Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Southampton's Shane Long, the Football Association has announced.
The Spaniard appeared to stamp on Long in the 43rd minute of Saturday’s Premier League clash at St Mary's, which saw Chelsea come from two goals behind to win 3-2.
The incident was not seen by the match officials but the FA have decided to take retrospective action after reviewing footage.
Alonso has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge. If found guilty, the 27-year-old will serve a three-match ban.
That will rule him out of this weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Southampton as well as Premier League clashes against Burnley and Swansea.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes was disapproving of the tackle at the time.
He said: "It was a poor challenge, it should have been a red card in my view.
"The disappointment was the officials didn't see it, they were all within a 10 to 15 metre radius. One of them should have seen it.
"It was a poor tackle, and one that could have been more severe for Shane."
